Castle Falkenstein / Jennifer R Povey
Greetings, friends of Falkenstein!
Please allow me to give you an peek what is happening behind the scenes at Fat Goblin Games where it concerns the Great Game.
As you might know, we recently released Firearms and Margarine, the first official, stand-alone Adventure Entertainment published for Castle Falkenstein. At roughly 40 pages, this murder mystery set in Paris might take several sessions to complete and is poorly suited to one shots and convention play.
Fortunately, we have two more Adventure Entertainments on the way which are considerably shorter in length!
Brodick Castle, the setting for an upcoming Adventure Entertainment
The first, The Black Lady of Brodick Castle by Lady Jennifer Povey, sends the Dramatic Characters to the Scottish Isle of Arran to investigate the "black lady", a mysterious apparition appearing in the castle garden! Is she a ghost? A banshee? Or something more sinister?
In the second, Babbage's Engine by Grandmaster Steve Kenson, sees the Dramatic Characters embarking on the maiden voyage of a train controlled entirely by a Babbage Engine "brain". What could possibly go wrong?
Both of these adventures will be the perfect length for Castle Falkenstein one-shots, convention games, or store demonstrations.
A map of Paris of the time. This one was used for Firearms and Margarine
Beyond Adventure Entertainments we are also hard at work on other projects! Miss Peril's Guide to Paris is in the process of being transcribed. I am aided in the task by Docteur Julien Pirou, a native of the fine city who is ensuring the work is a true representation of the spirit and style of the City of Lights. With his help we have begun decoding biographical information on Joséphine Balsamo (aka the Countess of Cagliostro), the Divine Sarah Bernhardt, Amélie Bosquet (France's foremost expert of all matters Fae), the infamous Nana Coupeau, the gentleman thief Arsène Lupin, the Phantom of the Opera, and even a very real, very powerful Green Faerie. I will have previews to share as we transcribe more of this amazing guidebook to Paris sent across the Faerie Veil by Captain Olam.
Of course, that isn't all! Digging through the various papers sent over by R. Talsorian Games, I have found three manuscripts of particular interest.
One concerns police, detectives, and criminals. It seems to be some sort of manual for fighting crime (or perhaps committing it) in New Europa.
One involves the various "house rules" for the Great Game observed and compiled by Captain Tom Olam as he has traveled the world. Two parts of this manuscript, The Tarot Variation and the Second Tarot Variation have already been published. We anticipate publishing The Abilities Variation next, providing more options to Hosts and Players for customizing the use of Abilities in Castle Falkenstein.
Finally, the last is a guide to witches in the world of New Europa, separate and apart from the Orders and Lodges of Sorcerers which define "civilized" Magick. I've asked for help in transcribing this document. I cannot say who yet but rest assured this gentleman is the foremost expert on witchcraft when it comes to roleplaying games. There is no better.
Let me close with a bit of news. Using the power of the Internet I have been running a Castle Falkenstein campaign entitled "High Adventure in the Steam Age". I believe I've mentioned this before. The sessions have been recorded and available on YouTube but we have had several requests for them in a more portable, "podcast" format.
I'm pleased to say we have listened! We here at Fat Goblin Games have created a podcast we are calling, appropriately enough, Fat Goblin Games Presents. Three sessions of "High Adventure in the Steam Age" are available for your listening pleasure as is a session of a Pathfinder Roleplaying Game campaign set in our Shadows over Vathak horror fantasy setting. Another session of "High Adventure in the Steam Age", which will preview our upcoming Babbage's Engine Adventure Entertainment, will go live there and on YouTube next week.
You can find the podcast on iTunes by searching for "Fat Goblin Games Presents" in the podcast app or you can download the files directly from the podcast blog.

Your humble servant,
Greetings and welcome to another Falkenstein Friday!
This week I've exciting news to share with you. Fat Goblin Games has released not one but TWO new Castle Falkenstein products in our continued effort to revive and support the Great Game.
The first book is The Second Tarot Variation. As you may recall, The Tarot Variation provided rules for replacing ordinary playing cards with Tarot cards when using the Sorcery Deck. The Second Tarot Variation, instead, provides rules for replacing ordinary playing cards with Tarot cards when using the Fortune Deck. The Minor Arcana function much like regular cards using this optional system but the Major Arcana cards become a way of providing surprising twists in plot and rules mechanics.
For example, the Lovers may be played to do the following:
All for one and one for all! Allow the entire party exactly one minute to trade cards or exchange hands as desired. Cards representing drawn power for Sorcery may not be included in this exchange.
While playing the Star would have the following effect:
Wishes can come true but hopes can come crashing down. The Player should hazard a guess as to the suit of the top card of the fortune deck and then flip it over. If her guess was correct or if the card is from the Major Arcana, she gains a High Success on her Feat. If her guess is incorrect, she instead Fumbles.
More exciting, perhaps, is the release of Firearms & Margarine. Something I often hear from gamers interested in Castle Falkenstein is they often wished they had an existing, official Adventure Entertainment. Even if they didn't run the Adventure Entertainment it would provide guidance in the crafting of their own, unique dramas.
We at Fat Goblin Games have heard these words and taken them to heart. Firearms & Margarine is the first of several Adventure Entertainments we will be publishing. This particular Adventure Entertainment takes the form of a mystery as the Dramatic Characters race to uncover the identity of a killer before all of New Europa is embroiled in a war between Faeries and humans!
If political mysteries aren't your heart's desire do not fear. We have two more Adventure Entertainments on the way. One, by Lady Jennifer Povey, concerns a Scottish Isle, a castle, and a ghostly visitor! The second, by Grandmaster Steven Kenson, will take the Dramatic Characters on the ultimate in modern transportation as they travel aboard a train controlled by a Babbage Engine!
Look for both those new Adventure Entertainments in the months ahead but, for now, please enjoy The Second Tarot Variation and Firearms & Margarine.
Your humble servant.
